Ultrasound

Ultrasound has been used in medical imaging for more than 40 years, and the technology has advanced dramatically over that time. Modern systems produce high-quality images using high-frequency sound waves, making ultrasound a very safe and commonly used imaging option.

Ultrasound is particularly effective for assessing soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and organs. With excellent resolution, it can detect abnormalities as small as 1 mm. Its real-time capability also makes it an outstanding modality for guiding a wide range of soft tissue and joint injections with accuracy and comfort.

At Recover Radiology, our highly experienced team of sonographers ensures that every ultrasound examination is performed with expertise, care and attention to detail, delivering clear imaging and a positive patient experience.

We can accommodate same-day or next-day appointments in most cases, ensuring timely access to the care you need.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a way to assess injuries involving muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. It’s especially helpful for diagnosing sporting injuries, overuse conditions, muscle tears, joint inflammation and bursitis. It also guides targeted injections with accuracy.

Vascular Ultrasound

Vascular ultrasound is a safe test that uses sound waves to assess blood flow in your arteries and veins. It can detect narrowing, blockages, clots, aneurysms and other vascular issues without radiation. Our advanced vascular specialist sonographers provide high-quality, accurate imaging to support clear diagnosis and timely treatment.

Obstetric Imaging

Obstetric ultrasound is a safe method used to monitor pregnancy and assess the health and development of your baby. It provides clear, real-time images that help track growth, check your baby’s position, assess the placenta and amniotic fluid and screen for structural concerns throughout pregnancy. Please note that obstetric scans incur a co-payment, which will be discussed with you at your appointment.

General Imaging

General ultrasound is used to assess many parts of the body, including the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid and other soft tissues. It provides real-time images that help diagnose conditions such as gallstones, liver disease, kidney issues, pelvic pain and thyroid abnormalities.

Frequently asked questions

How is an ultrasound performed?

An ultrasound is a straightforward and comfortable procedure. A small amount of gel is applied to your skin so the ultrasound transducer can glide smoothly and capture clear images. The scan itself is painless, though the sonographer may ask you to gently move the area being examined so they can better assess how the structures behave in real time.

Your images are carefully reviewed by a radiologist, who may also step in to assess something directly if needed. Most ultrasound appointments take no longer than 30 minutes. A detailed report is then sent to your referring healthcare professional within 24-48 hours.

Your results are best discussed with your doctor, who can explain the findings and guide you through any next steps in your care or treatment.

Are there any risks or limitations?

Ultrasound is extremely safe, with no known harmful effects. It uses sound waves, not radiation, which makes it suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant patients.

There are some natural limitations. Ultrasound waves don’t pass easily through bone, so other imaging such as X-ray may be recommended to assess bony structures. Air and intestinal gas can also block the sound waves, which can make it harder to clearly see deeper organs like the pancreas.

If your sonographer or radiologist feels additional imaging is needed, they will advise you and your referring healthcare professional.

Preparation

For all ultrasound scans, please wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Most ultrasounds, including musculoskeletal, soft tissue and vascular studies, require no special preparation.

Some examinations do need specific preparation:

  • Renal or bladder ultrasound: Drink one litre of water one hour before your appointment and arrive with a full bladder.

  • Abdominal ultrasound: Fast from food and drink for six hours beforehand. You may sip a small amount of water if needed.

  • Smokers: Please avoid smoking during the six hours before your abdominal ultrasound, as it can affect the accuracy of the results.

If you’re unsure about your preparation, our team is always happy to guide you.
