What to Expect During Your First CT Scan

Posted by Recover Radiology on 21 April 2026

If your GP has referred you for a CT scan, you might feel a bit anxious about the experience. That's completely normal. CT scans are one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in modern medicine, but they can seem intimidating if you've never had one before. At Recover Radiology in Morphett Vale, we perform hundreds of CT scans every month, and our team is experienced at putting patients at ease. Let's walk through what happens from start to finish so you know exactly what to expect.

What Is a CT Scan?

A CT (computed tomography) scan is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays to create detailed 3D pictures of the inside of your body. Unlike a standard X-ray, which produces a flat 2D image, a CT scanner rotates around your body and takes hundreds of cross-sectional images. These images are then processed by a computer to create a complete picture of organs, bones, and soft tissues. This makes CT scans incredibly useful for diagnosing conditions ranging from infections and injuries to tumours and organ disease.

How to Prepare for Your CT Scan

Preparation depends on which part of your body is being scanned. For most CT scans, you can eat and drink normally beforehand. However, if your scan involves contrast dye (an injectable agent that helps visualise certain structures), you may be asked to fast for a few hours before your appointment. When you book, our staff will give you specific instructions tailored to your scan. It's important to follow these guidelines to ensure the best possible images. Also, let us know in advance if you're pregnant, have kidney problems, or are allergic to iodine, as these factors may affect how we proceed.

What Happens During the Scan?

When you arrive, you'll change into a hospital gown if needed and remove any metal objects (jewellery, phones, keys). You'll lie on a motorised table that slides into the CT scanner—it looks like a large doughnut. The scanner is open on both ends, so you won't feel claustrophobic. The radiographer will be in a nearby control room watching you on a monitor and communicating through a speaker system. During the scan, the table moves slowly through the scanner while it takes images. You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds to prevent motion blur. The whole process typically takes just 10-15 minutes.

Understanding Contrast Dye

Some CT scans require contrast dye to highlight blood vessels, organs, or other structures. If your scan needs contrast, a radiographer will insert a small IV into your arm and inject the dye through it. You might feel a warm sensation spreading through your body—this is completely normal and usually lasts just a few seconds. The dye is cleared from your system naturally over the next 24 hours. Before injection, we always ask about allergies and kidney function, as certain precautions are needed for patients with renal issues. If you've had an allergic reaction to contrast dye before, make sure to mention it when you book.

How Long Does a CT Scan Take?

The actual scanning time is usually between 10 and 15 minutes, though the total appointment time will be longer. Plan for 30-45 minutes to account for check-in, preparation, and any paperwork. If you're receiving contrast dye, allow a bit more time for the IV setup and post-injection observation.

When Will I Get My Results?

After your CT scan, a specialist radiologist reviews your images carefully—typically within 24-48 hours. The radiologist writes a detailed report and sends it directly to your referring doctor. Your GP will then discuss the results with you and explain what they mean for your health and next steps. In some cases, if the findings are urgent, we'll contact your doctor sooner.
